Our story
Hypex was founded in Groningen in 1996 as a designer and manufacturer of Class-D amplifier technology, working with audio brands and manufacturers around the world. From the early days, a small but passionate group of DIY enthusiasts found their way to our products and started building their own amplifiers around them.
Serving that community well, however, required something different from how the rest of the business worked. DIY builders wanted to order single modules, ask build questions, share measurements and learn as they went — not negotiate quotes for a hundred units. In 2016 we launched a dedicated DIY operation, with its own team, its own catalogue and its own customer support, built entirely around how DIY enthusiasts actually want to buy, build and learn.
That operation ran under the name DIYclassD until 2025, when we rebranded it to Hypex Direct — a clearer name, bringing the DIY operation in line with the wider Hypex brand family, while keeping everything that made it work.
Today Hypex Direct is the place where private builders, hobbyists and audiophiles get direct access to Hypex amplifier technology, with three decades of engineering experience behind every product we ship.
